On March 13th, the Alto community celebrated an extraordinary milestone as resident Marie turned 100 years old. With a century of memories, family, and friendships behind her, Marie’s story is one of resilience, love, and appreciation for the people who make life meaningful.
A Life Rooted in Family
Marie grew up on the northwest side of Chicago in Logan Square, where her early years were filled with family and simple joys. Later in life, she and her husband Niels settled in Grayslake, where they raised their three children and built a life centered around family and community.
Today, Marie’s family has grown into an incredible legacy. Known lovingly as “Grammy,” she is the proud matriarch of three children, eight grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren, with one great-great-grandchild expected this July. Family gatherings and birthday celebrations were always a tradition in Marie’s home, creating memories that have carried through generations.
How Marie Met Niels
Marie met her husband, Niels, while working at a bakery after school. Both of their parents happened to know the bakery owners, who arranged a dinner so the two could meet. That introduction sparked a lifelong love story.
Marie and Niels were married for more than 50 years. Their journey together included challenges as well as beautiful moments. After 17 years of marriage, the couple survived a devastating car 
accident caused by a drunk driver. Niels suffered a brain injury that changed life for the family, but Marie’s strength and dedication carried them forward.
A Life of Hard Work and Community
Marie’s career began in that same bakery where she first met Niels. Over the years she also worked as a typist and in a school lunchroom, but most of her professional life was spent in bookkeeping and payroll for Frandsen Brothers Tool & Manufacturing Company, a business owned by Niels and his brother in Grayslake.
Beyond her career, Marie remained deeply involved in her community. She was active with the Women’s Club at the United Protestant Church (UPC) and volunteered with the Grayslake Historical Society, contributing her time and energy to causes she cared about.
Favorite Memories Through the Years
Some of Marie’s most cherished memories are simple moments shared with family.
As a child, she spent summers in Algonquin, swimming every day in the Fox River with her mother. Later, when she and Niels moved to Grayslake, they lived just one block from the lake. The family kept a rowboat by the shore, making it easy to spend afternoons out on the water together.
Another treasured tradition was their annual month-long trips to Florida, staying on Singer Island near Palm Beach. Those warm escapes created memories the family still talks about today.
In the summers, when grandchildren lived nearby, Marie loved having them over almost every day—filling the house with laughter, activity, and stories.
Life at Alto
Marie first moved to Alto six years ago. After only two months, she faced a difficult health challenge when she was diagnosed with cancer. She temporarily moved in with her daughter during her recovery but returned to Alto four years ago, where she continues to thrive today.
While she enjoys many of the activities at Alto—daily exercise classes, bingo games, parties, and social gatherings—what Marie values most is the friendships she has formed within the community.
Words of Wisdom
After nearly a century of life experiences, Marie shares a simple yet powerful secret to longevity:
“Always think of the future and be glad that you have your family and friends around you.”
As Marie celebrated her 100th birthday, her life reminds us that the most meaningful things—family, friendships, and shared memories—are what truly make a life well lived.
