Just before celebrating an incredible milestone—his 99th birthday—Harold made Alto his home in January 2025. Now, with a century of stories, accomplishments, and wisdom behind him, Harold’s journey is one of ingenuity, devotion, and deep family roots.
Alto Grayslake celebrated Harold’s 100th birthday on January 28, 2026, and took the opportunity to sit down with him and reflect on a century of life and memories.
Growing Up in Chicago and Building a Family
Harold was raised on the northwest side of Chicago, spending his childhood in the Irving Park and Portage Park neighborhoods. Later in life, he raised his own family in Morton Grove and Arlington Heights, Illinois. In 2025, he relocated to the Grayslake area, bringing with him a lifetime of memories and experiences.
Family remains at the heart of Harold’s life. He is the proud grandfather of three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren—a legacy that continues to grow across generations.
An Inventive Mind and Remarkable Career
Harold’s professional life is nothing short of extraordinary. He is credited with inventing the first cordless drill for the SKIL company, as well as a one-handed portable belt sander—innovations that helped shape modern tools as we know them today.
His engineering career also included designing diesel locomotives and submarines after moving to Beloit, Wisconsin. Never one to stop learning, Harold later attended night classes at the University of Chicago Graduate School, where he earned his MBA—proof that curiosity and ambition don’t fade with age.
Faith That Shaped a Lifetime
One of Harold’s most meaningful memories dates back to when he was just 12 years old. While attending a Swedish Covenant Church with his family, a visiting pastor from Minnesota delivered a message that profoundly impacted Harold, his parents, and his sister. That moment marked the beginning of a life rooted in Christian faith.
Throughout high school, Harold participated in Biblefellowship led by a school teacher—a program that would change his life in more ways than one. It was there that he met Marie, his future wife and fellow classmate. They graduated together, married after Harold completed his engineering degree, and began a life of shared faith and purpose.
Travel, Memories, and Meaningful Moments
Harold fondly recalls traveling to Hawaii and Scandinavia—specifically Sweden and Denmark—with his daughters when they were young. He also toured toward Switzerland, experiences that remain vivid highlights of his life and adventures with family.
Life at Alto
At Alto, Harold stays engaged and connected. He enjoys bingo, Bible study, and participates in exercise classes—even if he admits he doesn’t love them, he knows they’re good for him. His positive attitude and quiet determination continue to inspire those around him.
Harold’s story is a beautiful reminder that a life well lived is built on faith, family, curiosity, and contribution. We are honored to have him as part of the Alto community and grateful for the legacy he continues to share every day.
