At Allegro Winter Park, residents bring their unique stories, talents, and passions to life — and few embody that spirit quite like Pepe. Since moving to the community in 2018, he’s been sharing his love for food and friendship through his popular monthly program, Cooking with Pepe. We sat down with Pepe to learn more about his journey, his passion for Italian cooking, and what inspires him to keep creating delicious memories for the community.
When and why did you move to Allegro Winter Park?
I moved here from New York in July 2018 when my wife became ill and needed extra help. Our kids live in the area, so Allegro Winter Park was a perfect choice. It allowed me to be close to family and find a place that truly feels like home.
What do you love most about living here?
Definitely the people. The residents and most of the staff are very respectful, friendly, and supportive. It really feels like a community where everyone looks out for each other.
It all started about five years ago when the previous Lifestyle Director came up with the idea. We thought it would be fun to bring residents together over food, and it’s turned out to be one of the greatest experiences I’ve had here. Every month, we cook, laugh, and enjoy a great meal together.
Have you always loved cooking?
Yes, I have! I was an Army cook, and after retiring, I took over cooking at home when my wife was no longer able to. Cooking has always been something that brings me peace and joy.
What types of dishes do you enjoy making most?
Italian — of course! I love making sauces and pastas, especially traditional recipes that bring back good memories.
Do you have a favorite dish with special meaning?
Definitely my “Sunday Sauce.” Growing up, it was a family tradition to have pasta on Sundays. It’s more than just a meal — it’s a memory that connects generations.
How often do you host your cooking demonstrations?
Once a month. It’s something I look forward to — and so do the residents!
How do residents respond to your classes?
They love it! The response has been overwhelming. I enjoy seeing everyone come together, laughing, tasting, and sharing stories. That’s what food is all about.
How does Allegro support your passion?
Allegro has been wonderful. They give me the space to host my demonstrations and make sure I have the ingredients I need. They really encourage residents to share their passions and be creative.
Have you collaborated with the Executive Chef on any events?
Yes, I’ve had the chance to work with our Executive Chef on a few dishes and special events. It’s always a great learning experience and a lot of fun.
What does it mean to share your love of cooking at this stage in life?
I enjoy being around people and food — that’s what makes Cooking with Pepe so special. It’s even better having Mauricio, Michael, and Brian by my side. Mauricio, our Lifestyle Assistant, is my sous chef, and I couldn’t do this without them.
Is there a dream dish or theme you’d like to try next?
Yes — Pasta Puttanesca! We’re planning to make it next month.
If you could cook for anyone, who would it be?
Lidia Bastianich. She’s an Italian-American chef and TV personality I really admire. I’d make her veal marsala or spaghetti aglio e olio.
What three ingredients can you not live without?
Garlic, parsley, and olive oil — the holy trinity of Italian cooking!
What advice would you give to others about following their passions later in life?
Do something you enjoy. When you love what you do, success follows naturally. I love what I’m doing, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to share it with others.
Pepe’s warmth and enthusiasm are contagious — and Cooking with Pepe has become a beloved tradition at Allegro Winter Park. His story reminds us that it’s never too late to follow your passions, try something new, and bring joy to others along the way.
On November 12th, before his cooking demonstration for that day, Allegro awarded Pepe his own chef’s coat, making it official!
