Allegro, Heritage Oaks Resident Celebrates 102nd Birthday

Tallahassee, Florida - February 5, 2012

Allegro is proud to announce that one of its valued residents, Lois Kramer turns 102-years-old on February 5th. Allegro will host a party honoring Lois at 3pm and invites the public to join in this milestone. Lois Kramer

Lois Stoutamire Kramer, known as Aunt Lois, is loved and admired by her family and all of the residents at Allegro. Born February 5, 1910 in Liberty County, Lois was one of 9 brothers and sisters. Lois left home at the age of 18 and rode the train to Atlanta, Georgia ... not an easy feat for young Lois. Determined to become a nurse, she went through the nursing program at Grady hospital. While working, she met the love of her life and husband, Dr. Joseph Hines. He was a charter member of the American Medical Association and was loved and respected by his peers. One of his notable patients was Margaret Mitchell whom Lois met on many occasions along with superstars like Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh. Aunt Lois remembers sitting with them at the premier of Gone with the Wind in Atlanta. She went out with them after work in her nursing uniform while they were dressed in Hollywood’s finest ... furs and jewels!

Following nursing school, she joined the Army and trained at Camp Landing and landed at the top of her training class. Lois served in the Burma Theatre during WWII in China, which was the name used by the United States Army for its forces operating in conjunction with British and Chinese Allied air and land forces in China, Burma, and India during World War II. There is no doubt that those soldiers received the best possible medical care and the kind and nurturing attention of our dear Aunt Lois. She was the 7th woman in the US Army to become a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Nursing Corp. Returning to Atlanta after the war, she went to work for the Veteran Hospitals. Committed to helping others, she was the head nurse at five of the top VA hospitals during her career and opened the 800 bed hospital in Puerto Rico. Aunt Lois has set up educational funds for approximately 30 of her nieces and nephews.

Lois Kramer has lead an incredible and inspiring life. Her adventurous life only continued when she moved to Allegro over 10 years ago. Today, at the age of 102, she is an inspiration to all of Allegro’s residents and staff. Lois has been known as the “social butterfly” at Allegro. She participates in many of the events including exercise classes. “I knew this was the place for me as soon as I walked through the door and I have never had any regrets since I moved here,” says Lois. “I love having all the aspects of life that are needed or wanted...from a beautiful chapel to wonderful dining and an array of events. The quality of staff is so special and the residents are my family. I encourage my family and friends to move to Allegro. It was the best decision I made.”
